NYC-what is legal for me?

If I posses a rifle/shotgun license (hypothetical at this point) what type of rifle is considered legal?

I'm a total newbie at this, so bear with me. I found this list of "unacceptable" firearms. Does it leave anything out that I can acquire? I'm looking for home protection purposes. I think I read somewhere that rifles must have atleast a 16" barrel and shotguns must have a 18" barrel within the city. Any options that are reasonable?

For City of New York: Title 38 of the Rules of the City of New York, 17-01. Assault Weapons Designated. I've resolved to stay in NYC for the near term. I know it could be a death trap, but I'm not in a position to be running for the hills.

Perhaps someone living in NYC can speak up...but it looks like semi-autoloading rifles and shotguns are not legal. So anything not semi-autoloading: bolt-action, lever action, single-shot, pump-action rifles and shotguns would be okay.

Pump shotgun would be a good choice for a "buy-me-first" weapon, IMO. Remington 870s 12 and 20 gauge are readily available and inexpensive. Ideally a 21 inch Vent Rib barrel with screw-in chokes is quite versatile. It can shoot every thing from birdshot to buckshot and slugs for an effective weapon with a range out to 50 to 75 yards or so.

I don't know the rules for NYC but I live in NYS and went to a Walmart in PA.

When buying shotgun shells the guy asked for my license and told me if I lived in NYC I could not buy them.

I cannot give you a good place to ask your question. Maybe visit a precinct or call 311:sarc:

Looks like you can find the poop here...

You need to obtain a permit for a shotgun if you live in NYC's five boroughs. Holy $hit they make it friggin difficult.

Well to start everything is illegal till you get the NYC Rifle/Shotgun permit from NYPD takes about 6-8 months. Then just about any semi-auto is banned within the city.
